I grew up all over the world, living in Cairo, Honolulu, Austin, Phoenix, Albuquerque, New York, Los Angeles, and Ft. Collins, Colorado, while we also traveled through Asia, Africa, Europe, and the Caribbean. My writing life has become, by both necessity and design, a writing, producing, and directing career, including the formation of Babyhead Productions with my husband Ronald Shore.
I dove into show business immediately upon graduating high school a year early in Texas, moving to New York at the age of 17. After studying at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts I began to work as an actor and singer, most notably playing the role of Magaldi in various productions of Evita. In the early 90s I started writing, and my first play, The Liquidation of Granny Peterman, was produced in Hollywood.
While writing and rewriting the script that would become my first film, Silent Lies, I worked on my first book, a photo-anthology called Uncommon Heroes that won a Stonewall Book Award from the American Library Association. Me and my partner on the project, Phillip Sherman, tied with writer Dorothy Allison.
Silent Lies, a dark, violent film about incest, caused a stir, and was banned in England until cuts were made. Though press materials for the film said otherwise, I was referred to in newspaper articles as an “incest survivor,” which I actually found rather funny. My Paramount/Showtime film Bobbie's Girl starred Bernadette Peters, Rachel Ward, and Jonathan Silverman. Bernadette received an Emmy nomination while the film received a G.L.A.A.D. nomination and a citation from The Advocate as one of the top ten television events of the year. My book Mr. Confidential was named a ForeWord Magazine Book of the Year finalist and won an Hermes Creative Platinum Award for Outstanding Non-Fiction. And I'm working with composer David Snyder to turn it into a stage musical.I've also worked on such televisions shows as Judging Amy, Witch, Sally B., Kill Your Inner Child, and Icing on the Cake.
And I've written lyrics for songs in Witch, Bobbie's Girl, The Peddler, Magic Boys, The Middle Place, and the upcoming Mr. Confidential.
